Tradition is a part of us - Humanity is All of Us

LOCATION
Reedie Drive, Wheaton, MD

COMISSIONNED BY
Montgomery County Parks and Planning

PROJECT GOALS
This project was a tribute to the idea that we all smile in the same language. The mural celebrates our shared humanity in an area of Maryland known for its rich diversity. Nicole drew inspiration for the design from traditional, culturally celebrated dances representing a range of human emotions and experiences. We dance for many reasons, in many different styles, to many different beats, but each dance is a tribute to the heart that beats in the chest of the dancer. Nicole was also inspired by her son who has Down Syndrome and loves to dance. Despite the fact that his words can sometimes be difficult to understand, his humanity shines especially bright when he dances.

Hold Your Light

LOCATION
Summit Avenue, Ken-Gar, MD

COMMISSIONED BY
The Town of Kensington, MD

PROJECT GOALS
This mural was commissioned by the Town of Kensington, MD in recognition of neighboring Ken-Gar, a tiny, close-knit neighborhood of strong souls, many of whom are descended from formerly enslaved people. The goal of the project was to convey both the warmth of their community as well as the incredible adversity, violence and neglect that they have suffered for decades. The mural title comes from one of the older African American spirituals traditionally sung call-and-response style. It signifies the perseverance of the human spirit through good and terrible times. Former and current residents used a glow-in-the-dark paint to "light" the lanterns on each of the buildings depicted in the mural. The mural serves as a call to hold a light to every person we meet, to really see one another's humanity and to treat each other with dignity and respect.

LOCATION
Frederick Ave, Kensington, MD

COMMISSIONED BY
The Town of Kensington Greenscape Committee

PROJECT GOALS
The goal of this project was to beautify an old streetscape and to direct foot-traffic into Kensington's newly renovated Clum-Kennedy Park. The mural concept was drawn from a line from the journal of one of the Town’s original residents, Ms. Bertha Clum. She wrote “Finding wildflowers is not all luck. You have to keep your eyes open.” Nicole was inspired by this sweet call to look out for the small, beautiful things in life: To search for the good and to treasure it.

Kensington Row Bookshop

PROJECT GOALS
The client commissioned this mural on the exterior of her independent bookshop as a way of sharing the magic happening inside her shop with people passing on the street. Whimsical, colorful, growing book plants in terra-cotta pots and on balconies reminiscent of the owner's native Barcelona invite passerby's to pop in and explore.

COMMISSIONED BY
Fleurir Chocolates

PROJECT GOALS
Nicole was commissioned to design elements for three of Fleurir Chocolate's locations. The goal of these projects was to visually extend the brand of a boutique chocolate shop by adding interest and whimsy in the form of two and three demential mural installations. The mural installations of trees included painted elements as well as three-dimensional elements such as tea cups, tennis balls and clothes pins. Nicole hand-painted counter fronts to add the vibe of a fresh, loose, modern bouquet to the store who's name translates to "to bloom" in French. Nicole also designed custom transfers for the shop's individual chocolates.

The Calvert Woodley "Family"

PROJECT GOALS
This mural celebrates the power of family. CW is not only a Washington, DC institution and multigenerational shop, but also a business that truly cares for its employees and customers as family. In fact, many CW employees added their own mark to the wall as it was being painted. The mural celebrates the idea that a musician can dance to the beat of his own drummer, but music played in concert with others is magic, and that even the most beautiful beverage tastes better when raised with a friend.
